Adjectives

形容詞

First decide whether an adjective belongs to the い or な family. That single choice tells you how it changes and how it sits before a noun.

い-adjectives

The final い is part of the adjective and changes for negative and past forms.

non-past +高いです
non-past −高くないです
past +高かったです
past −高くなかったです

Before a noun高い店

な-adjectives

They behave like nouns at the end of a sentence, but use な directly before a noun.

non-past +静かです
non-past −静かじゃありません
past +静かでした
past −静かじゃありませんでした

Before a noun静かな店

A useful exception to English instinct

Preference and skill

好き, きらい, 上手, and 下手 are な-adjectives. The liked or skilled-at thing is marked by が.

I like sushi私は寿司が好きです
She is good at Japanese彼女は日本語が上手です

Before a noun好きな食べ物
