Conversation pattern

Introduce yourself

Move through identity, origin, arrival, home, language ability, and first impressions without repeating obvious subjects.

Keep these three
  • から marks origin; に marks the time or destination point.
  • Japanese naturally drops 私は after the topic is clear.
  • あまり pairs with a negative expression for “not very much.”

Place から来ました / Time に来ました

Origin and arrival

Use から for where movement begins and に for the time point or destination.

I came from Chile.
I came to Japan in April.

Noun が分かります

What you understand takes が

With 分かります, the understood thing is marked by が, even though English makes it an object.

I understand a little Japanese.
I do not understand very well.

Place に住んでいます

Describe a current state

The ています form can describe an ongoing state. Here, に marks the place where the person resides.

I live in Tokyo now.
